Happy New Year!

Dear Family,

I am go grateful that we have been able to make contact this year through this newsletter and facebook. While the news seems very dismal and forecasts for the coming year reflects that, I feel very peaceful.

Whatever happens we have our family to fall back on. If we lose our money or our jobs, it's happened to many of us before. We will all get through it together. We can look at that new little baby, Theodore, and see our future. We can expect another birth at the end of May. Will that little one be born on Mom's birthday(3), or Kathy's(16) or Sharon's (16), Glenn's(15) or Aunt Kathy's(24), Grandpa Rasmussen (24), Cassie's(20), Miriam's(10)or Dad's (hopefully). I'm sure I have missed some birthdays. Boy, our family is large! We are very lucky to have each other.

I wish you all a Happy New Year. Anything you'd like to see happen this coming year??? Please comment.

Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice
December 21 st Winter Solstice. What it means to me. Shortest amount of daylight all year. Sunrise today 10:14 am, sunset 3;42pm. 5 hours 28 minutes of daylight. Temp. -5°. Aurora Borlias (Norther Lights). Four days til Christmas. What a special day. Tomorrow we will gain 5 seconds of day light and by January 26 th we will be gaining over 5 minute a day. Winter's half over. 2009 begins a new year, with a lot of hopes and dreams. Next year I going to be a better person. Try to find good in everyone, treat people with respect and have fun doing it. One person can make a difference. Even if it is just for one person.
Remember it's time to book your trip to Alaska. I have openings all summer.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,
Ed

Settling in

Well, Sadie and I are all moved into our new apartment in Fairport, NY. We are loving it. I have my own office and Sadie has a huge walk in closet. Sadie got a job with the college we went to and I will be starting a tech support job next week. Today I also had my first meeting with my new web design client. I will be building a website for a little used book boutique on main street in Fairport. It is a cute little place and I get along with the owner quite well, so I am looking forward to this opportunity to expand my portfolio. This will probably also lead to work with other small businesses in Fairport... so I am pretty happy.

Winding Down...

Another wonderful Thanksgiving Day. Everyone has left, the dishes are done, and I am reflecting on what a wonderful day we had today. I love Thanksgiving. No stress except cooking a meal and all I had to do was the turkey and stuffing. Everyone brought tasty recipes, and we managed to fit everyone around makeshift card tables and patio chairs. This year we had two official new members, Monica and Miriam. Many of the family got to meet Christian, Miriam's brother for the first time. Our friends Alex and Nikki brought their 9 month old baby, Jasper, who was an angel, laughing at our boxer, Bolo. And of course, Ronnie's parents and Alex's mom were here too. We reflected on past Thanksgivings, some with my sister, Laura, back in the late 70s and 80s and many with Celeste. We missed Mike and Rose and Sharon and Dan and family. Sharon's girl, Shannon, won a 20 lb. turkey at school this week, so she provided their meal and they put up their Christmas tree today, and had snow for Thanksgiving in Spokane, WA.

I wish you all could come over for leftovers tomorrow. Love you all.

On the Eve of Thanksgiving...

Read this story, and remember, YOU ARE LOVED!

The Wooden Bowl

I guarantee you will remember the tale of the Wooden Bowltomorrow, a week from now, a month from now, a year from now.

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-years - old grandson. The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered. The family ate together at the table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.

The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. 'We must do something about father,' said the son. 'I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor.'

So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner. Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl. When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food.

The four-year-old watched it all in silence. One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, 'What are you making?

'Just as sweetly, the boy responded, 'Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up.' The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.

The words so struck the parents so that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done.

That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.

On a positive note, I've learned that, no matter what happens, how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow.

I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles four things: a rainy day, the elderly, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.

I've learned that, regardless of your relationship with your parents, you'll miss them when they're gone from your life.

I've learned that making a 'living' is not the same thing as making a 'life.

'I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back.

I've learned that every day, you should reach out and touch someone. People love that human touch -- holding hands, a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back.

I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance.

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn.

News from Celeste

Since my computer knowledge is so limited I am unable to login any where facebook or the blog I get so frustrated I must dicontinue trying. Whenever I think Ive succeded the page just goes back to the very beginning. So with that aside maybe you can find a way to include me in the family. Ive been working in the case management department for 3 years now. Personally I had a great summer as Ellen and Irene came to visit me. We had a ball. Ellen redecorated my whole living room with the addition of a chair and table placed in front of my curved window. then she just found cute stuff I already had a arranged it all perfectly. We saw Jethro Tull at the Greek Theater, went to the Getty museum, went to the beach, Hollywood saw a movie, ate lots of good food. In general it was amazing. Ellen had not been here since the early 80s so it was great to have company. My visit to Moms was also a high point. We love to go to Saratoga. We celebrated Ellens birthday with Aunt Lois at a fine restaurant .When we left Mom was in a wheelchair and was literally picked up by about six men over a curb. WOW she really attracts guys. Laura finally decided to attend the Witches party this year with her friend Teresa. She looked so adorable dressed as a leaf witch. Ellen was a tree witch and won the contest for the most creative of them all. I take pictures. Mom Has a new kitty named Bella a darling calico with the funniest endearing personality. She is so loyal to Mom she follows her around jumping on and off her walker seat every time she gets up to walk the kitty jumps on for a ride. She lays right in the center of the mantle as the centerpiece ornament. She did scratch Mom and gave her a cellulits for which she is cured of but the kitty must get declawed for heaven sakes. Now Mom has the flu and she can now keep food down but feels very weak. I talk to Kathleen Sr most everyday esp since her surgery and shes doing well going to PT and staying out of mischeif if that's possible. She so darling and creative painting ,crocheting and baking. I wish we could all be closer . That's all I can type for now . Love to all of you darlings Celeste

Another Recipe

Yam Supreme

Take one or two large cans of yams or fresh baked yams and mix with some butter or "Can't Believe It's Not" and set aside.

Line the bottom of your baking dish with 2-3 inches of sliced apple and some raisins if you like.
Sprinkle the apples with cinnamon and a little brown sugar or no sugar.

Gingerly place the yam mixture over the fruit without mixing them.
Bake at 350 until the top browns slightly.

The apples will become soft and bubbly. Stir everything together before serving. The kids really like this.

Thanksgiving Recipe (for real this time)

I thought this sounded good. Here is a turkey recipe that also includes the use of popcorn as a stuffing - imagine that. When I found this recipe I thought it was perfect for people like me, who
just are not sure how to tell when poultry is thoroughly cooked but not dried out. Give this a try.

8-15# turkey
1 cup melted butter
1 cup stuffing (Pepperidge Farm is good)
1 cup uncooked popcorn (Orville Redenbachers low-fat)
salt/pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush turkey with melted butter, salt and pepper. Fill cavity with stuffing and popcorn. Place in baking pan with the neck end toward the back of the oven.

Listen for the popping sounds. When the turkeys ass blows the oven door open and bird flies across the room it is done.

And you thought I didn't cook!! Logan, I hope you have noticed that my typing has improved!

Happy Thanksgiving to all .....from Laura and Adrian.

To a new beginning

What an exciting time our country has experienced over the last 20 months! And in the end we are granted a new beginning! Like Kathleen said all Americans wear coats of many colors and this is the time to wear them proudly.

I work for an international company and have many international young people that I have contact with daily and this election and it's result has really sparked their interest. They are all very happy for the US and are looking forward to beleiving in America again. I wave my flag so proud on the Vetrans Day 2008!

I'm done!

I just took my last college final. I am now officially done with college. Scary. It was a great experience. I met many wonderful people and learned a lot. Now if only I could find a job. What a perfect time for the economy to take a plunge. Couldn't they have done this when I started college so that we could be back up by now?

from Kathleen Berquist

Hello Family,

I have been thinking a lot lately about color! Especially about what color I am. This morning part of my body looks pale plum, my face looks pale pink with some dark brown spots. My toes have a blueish cast to the. Overall, I am a multicolored person and I like that.

I also have been thinking about what race I am. The only thing that I can come up with that makes any sense to me is the Human race.

If I could, I would wear a brown paper bag over my head and encourage others to do the same thing, but that might be awkward. Hopefully people will just get smarter and realize that we are all beautiful and respect and love each other.

From, Kathleen (heart)

Remembering..

I just set on a small little table photos of those of my family who have died. Two small candles light up the faces of Dad, Grandma & Grandpa Brady, Grandma & Grandpa (OWeel) Rasmussen, Great Grandpa James Brady, Bill's parents, aunts and uncles. Missing are photos of Uncle Bill, Uncle Ed, his Parents, and Aunt Charlie, who I remember. Also included today would be Lance's mother who died a few weeks ago. Then there are the young people, Henry Bruckelmyer and Bill's nephew Mike.

Today is All Saint's Day and tomorrow All Souls Day. The Celts and many other religions feel that this is the time when the barrier between the earth and the underworld or heaven is the thinnest and our good thoughts and memories can be passed on and through that barrier easily and our relatives are closest to us.

I remember Grandma Rasmussen telling me that I would be as beautiful as a model if only I would scrub my neck better. I remember when I got older, being invited to have a cocktail in the afternoons with her, looking over the beautiful field behind their house. I felt so grown up. I remember O'Weel bringing us a $1 each Saturday morning for our allowance and letting us eat an entire 1/2 a pint of ice cream EACH when we'd visit. Grandma Brady was always fun when she visited and I got to visit New York City twice and she took me everywhere. I especially remember Radio City Music Hall and the automat. I remember every train stop seemed an entire city by itself. I never met Grandpa Brady but we did write a few letters.

We all remember our own fathers, but as yet, it seems so much easier to recall my grandparents and write about them. I am glad I set up this little altar today, and I hope the 2 little flames attract those on the "other side" and let them know we're thinking of them and love them.

One of my dreams...

Last week I saw a video (it's 18 minutes) on TED.com by a wonderful scientist named Jill Bolte Taylor who had recently appeared on Oprah, and was written about in the latest issue of AARP magazine. She was a brain scientist who had a massive stroke and she described in detail what this stroke was like as it happened, and how it left her in a state of bliss. It took her 8 years to recover to "normalcy" although it was hard to leave that perpetual state of wonder and joy.

Her book is called "A Stroke of Insight".
Here is the link: http://www.tedafrica.org/index.php/talks/jill_bolte_taylor_s_powerful_stroke_of_insight.html

Anyway, John's wife, Miriam's, mother, Melanie has had a stroke and I am dreaming that I can learn more in order to help her regain some more function. She has been in an extended care facility and has little rehab there.

Life is a Jamboree

Just got back last week from a moose hunt. I purchased this 1975 motor home about a year ago and this was the first time I used it. Yeah I waited until there was snow on the roads and I had to drive over three mountain passes. I guess because I am writing this you know I made it back. We were hunting about 12 miles south of Delta Junction, Alaska. About 350 miles from home. Words can't truly do justice to the scenery along the way. Besides it's hard to take pictures when you can't pry your fingers off the steering wheel.

Sometimes mother nature just rocks. While I do enjoy hunting the harvesting part isn't why I do it. The adventure is what I live for. Every trip it's something new and in a few cases not many others have been. The trails where frozen and had about 2" of snow. Perfect. Temps were in the high twenties. Perfect. The wind was blowing about 40 mph. Not perfect. Two out of three not bad. This trip was unsuccessful, but the adventure was worth it.

I don't no how the miners did it. Here we are about 25 mile from the RV. All the trails were build by miner's. Long before there were ever ATV's. For me and many others ATV have opened the back country. And the nice thing for me is I live about 5 mile from Hatcher Pass and there is also miles and miles of mining trails. In Willow the back country is right my back door.

The Alaska life line. Along the way there are spots that you can see the Alaska pipeline. It amazes me that it's just there and not hidden or heavily guarded. This little baby has given me a check every year for the last 27. This year alone the check was $2069.00. Sweet. Of course $2066.00 will got to heating oil this winter, but what the heck I'm up three bucks. Life is good.
Until next time, Live your dreams,
Ed

Oh my gosh I think I figured this out!!!!!

I must admit, for the last 4 weeks I'd check into this site and not have a clue how to contribute to this blog. I'd wander in, check up and down, leave the internet frustrated and challenged but not defeated as today I finally noticed the "add post" lil link up dere and here we go...

Current Mood: Grateful
Current odor: My wife is cooking sausage, onions, broccoli- I'm salivating.

Last Movie: Righteous Kill (Dinero and Pachino) wait to rent it...or not.
Movie I want to see: W but Monica feels we've seen enough of this man and won't go.
Current Event: No offense to any who think the contrary but I really admire, trust and appreciate the brilliance of Obama.

I love you guys and will contribute more now that I've cracked the code. Monica is calling me for dinner...I'm so excited!! Peace.

Here is a pic that Bill took of her from her last figure competition....she's going to punch me for posting this. Oh god, I can't figure out how to post it......i stink at this...

Baked Potato Soup

This is a fabulous recipe thought I'd pass it on.

Yields 8(1 cup) servings or 4 main dish servings.

3 lbs. potatoes, scrubbed and pierced in several places
2T. butter or marg.
1 1/2 c. finely chopped onions
2T minced garlic
1 (14 1/2 oz) can chicken broth
3c. milk
1t. salt
1/4t. pepper

Preheat oven at 400. Bake potatoes until tender, about an hour.
peel when cool enough to handle.
Melt butter over med heat, add onions and garlic; cover and cook10 mins until soft but not brown. Add 2/3 of potatoes to pot and mash. Add broth, milk, salt and pepper. Bring to simmer and stir often. I scooped out about 2 cups and blended it to make it a little smoother and add about 1cup of sour cream just before serving. Cut remaining potatoes in small cubes.

Dorothy Brady remembers.....

In deciding so write a poem for our family newsletter, I was reminded that in 1935 I was the author of the class poem for our February graduating class of the Arthur Dixon Grammar School. That day when I recited (I remember it well) the poem , I saw my mother and father sitting in the front row of the balcony of our assembly hall and I was so proud, but nervous, to be speaking. The poem was called "Out of the Harbor into the Sea". Where did those words come from? I don't truly know, but now I write a poem circa 2008. Where do the words come from? I don't know but I'll try to be an author once again.

"When I was young and fancy free,
I thought of my place on the family tree.
First as a daughter one of three.
Then as a wife to the one man in my life.
But I never, never had a hunch
That I'd be the mother of the Brady Bunch!!

Family Updates

Here are our family members who do not have computer access. If you have any questions or want me to publish any news, just send me written info. Sweet Home Chicago

Hi Family, my name is Catherine Berger. I know I haven't formally met all of you yet, but because of this inspiring family newsletter, I look forward to meeting and sharing stories, and making memories with everyone! First to know me is to love me, and love my cats. This picture was taken almost 40 years ago, and is a very clear window into who I am. I love being outdoors and love kitties! Currently I have two cats, Avery (a Maine Coon American Curl, his side view looks like a devil as his ears really DO curl back, I will post a picture later), and Partner, one of the most regal cats I have ever had the pleasure of meeting!

Ok, so more about me, I am probably the only family member still residing in Chicago (about 40miles NW of the actual City), and will always call this "Sweet Home Chicago". I work in the Real Estate industry and with the current state of the economy, my job a little challenging right now!

So how are we related? I am the youngest daughter of Lois Jean Rasmussen and Edward Joseph Berger (the best dad a girl could have). I have one sister Marion, and one brother Ed. The picture to the right is of Mom (Aunt Lois), Brother (Cousin Ed), Sister (Cousin Marion), and me (Cousin Catherine) in Stone Lake Wisconsin. This is the cottage that we, as a family, spent summers together for about 10 years. Although we hadn't been there, together, since 1975, the history, smells, memories, and fun has never changed. I can't wait to go again!

Now to the really important news...Chicago Sports!! It is true, I am a Chicago Sports Fan Proud and true. If you have never been to a baseball game at Wrigley Field, I challenge all of you to experience the magic. This is the CUBBIES year, REALLY! It's only been 100 years! Of course Lovie Smith is no Mike Ditka, but the da BEARS are looking kinda good.....

Look forward to getting to know everyone! Have a great week!
GO CUBS GO!!!!

Nice to meet y'all!

One Less Swastika

In case you didn't already know, I love the woods. In my mind, you can't beat a beautiful day spent wandering around in the woods somewhere. Going to school in Rochester, one of the biggest things I missed was being able to walk out my door and instantly be in the woods; Left to my own thoughts and devices. Thankfully, the RIT apartment I moved into during my second year had woods close by.

Over the past few years I have spent a lot of time in those woods. Chewing on the green onions I find growing on the edges of the wood, I have seen a fair share of wildlife. One year a family of fox lived very close to my apartment. The pups were awfully cute while they explored their surroundings, wrestled each other, and chased insects. We have a fair supply of white tailed deer around. I doubt there is much hunting in the area. I swear I see more here than I had ever seen back home. I even spotted what I thought was a lynx twice. I contacted the DEC about it, and they tell me that it was most likely a bobcat. But it seemed much too big. I have read that these cats usually have very large territories and wander a lot. The first time I saw it I figured that it probably didn't live in the area and was just traveling through. But I saw one again about a year later. So I am glad they are sticking around.

During one of my outings early this summer, I was checking out an area where I had never been when I heard an eagle scream somewhere near me. It was the first time I had ever heard it in person. I only knew what it sounded like from watching nature shows on TV. There were a few farmers fields close by so I quickly went to see if I could spot the eagle. Several screams led me to a patch of wood behind a local college's building. I never did spot the eagle, but the screams did lead me right to a big oak tree. As I came closer I noticed that there were things carved all around the trunk. Upon inspection, there were many names, dates, and designs. Most of the dates were from the late 60's and early 70's. Coming around to one side, there was a big swastika with "Hells Angels" written underneath. I thought to myself, what self-respecting tree wants a swastika carved in it's trunk. So I took out my trusty leatherman and spent the next half hour or so making a few changes. Hopefully the original carvers don't see this and decide to hunt me down =)

Watermelon Paper

(This posting is by Kathleen Berquist)

Since I don't have a writing table, this short story is being written on a large old microbiology book. No, I did not wash my fingers before I started this nonfiction. OK, enough of this....Free Coffee.....Back when coffee was just coffee and it's price was about $1.00 a pound, one fall the price rose to about $5 a pound. Holy Cow! I was a new housewife and my husband and I did not drink coffee, we had never tried it. That sure makes the two of us sound sweet and innocent and we actually were. Oh, this is about coffee. Picture this, a gloomy, cool fall Sunday afternoon in Duluth. Two adults in the home and 2 children outside playing. It's quiet. All at once I hear a loud boney knock, knocking on the dried oak door. Who in the world could be so loud and persistent? I hurry to the door and open it. On the maroon painted large porch are two young men dressed like they just left a church service. The taller of the two has a shiny blue large can of coffee nestled in his left arm. Of course, my eyes stayed with the coffee can. If it had a blanket around it, it would have seemed like a tiny baby. Fair haired and blue eyed, he had something behind him.

The other man said, "If we can come in and show you how this Kirby vacuum cleaner works, you can have this can of coffee absolutely free." So I am thinking, what do I have to lose? My rug needs to be vacuumed and I could save the coffee. It would make a grand Christmas present. So I said, "Come on in".

We all walked through the large hallway, stepping over shoes and toys and end up in the diningroom. The three of us sit around the table and it all seems very serious. "Do you know anyone who has a Kirby?" Oh, yes, one of my friends did who was financially well off and who is the cleanest person I have ever met.

Ken, the tall guy, then asked me, "Is your husband home? If so, we want him to see this demonstration." I thought, fat chance of that. He was down in the crumbling bluestone basement, all dressed in leathers, with his Harley, his true love, which was apart in thousands of pieces on the basement floor.

"Please ask your husband to join us." So I did. Once down in the basement I told Bob that if he came upstairs and listened to these guys talk about a Kirby vacuum cleaner, we would get a huge can of coffee for free. To my absolute amazement, he came upstairs. So the four of us sat around the oak diningroom table like we were at a conference to decide something of the utmost importance. Kind of funny, don't you think?

Finally, the fairhaired guy puts on the tiniest tiny little vacuum bag, (I think it was made of canvas), onto the vacuum, that is so large and probably weighs 250 lbs. It gets pulled in and then turned on. I hate to say this but before the cleaner moves about 1/4 of the bag suddenly looks full. Blue eyes pushes the vacuum toward the couch and adds an attachment to the machine. The couch is an old scratching thing that I probably found by someones garbage one day, but we like it. Anyway it got cleaned. I am surprised anything was left of it when the guy was done. When he was doing it, it reminded me of when a tental assistant sucks the water out of your mouth, when the dentist is cleaning your teeth. You feel like your cheek is on the way down the drain. Anyway, back to the subject, was it coffee, or was it about a Kirby vacuum cleaner??

The vacuum was stopped, the guy took the bag off the vacuum and opened it. He could hardly get all the disgusting stuff out of the bag, and of course, it all expanded once it hit the air. I felt so dirty and sick inside; which is what I think was the purpose of the showing of how great this Kirby vacuum cleaner was.

All of us went back to our places at the conference table. "Mrs. Berquist, do you want this vacuum cleaner?" Without hesitation I said "YES". Bob, in his leathers still looks strong, he asks "How much is it?" Well, there are many ways we could work that out for you, so the guys talked about that for a long time. I just sat there feeling like I needed a bath, plus I wanted to start making dinner and I hadn't seen the kids for about three hours, it was almost dark. Finally one of the guys said to Robert, "She wants the Kirby, if you Love her you will buy it for her." Boy, did my ears perk up. Did he love me? I often wondered that. Finally after a long afternoon the vacuum cleaner was left at our house overnight. We were told that the price was $2500 that could be paid for a small amount at a time. Wow, what a grueling afternoon! The can of coffee was ours, now what!!!

Bob grabbed a beer, I made myself some tea and in about five minutes I came to my senses. The last thing I needed or wanted was a 250 lb, $2500 vacuum. Our old Chevy was worth about $200. So I told Bob I really didn't want that thing. I think he was relieved. So now what?. I said "why don't we get rid of our rug." So we called some friends and we told them our story. "Would you like our rug?" They said yes, but would we also like an old antiquish dresser they had?" We all thought that it was funny. Our friends came right over and we made the exchange. Now that our only rug was gone, the livingroom looked quite nice with it's shiny maple hardwood floor. Life was simpler again. Our family went to sleep peacefully that night.

Monday arrived. At about 11 am, the fairhaired young blue eyed man knocked once on the wooden screen door. He said, "Well are you going to buy the Kirby?"
I said, "No, we do not need it. We got rid of our only rug". He just gave me kind of sad look and asked to use my telephone. I heard him dial the number and he said, "They gave their rug away." He walked briskly through the house, back to the front door where the vacuum cleaner was waiting for him. He grabbed it by the neck and lugged it down the stairs, got into his car never to be seen by me again.

Almost 40 years later, I remember that incident like it was yesterday. I sure hope both those guys have easier jobs. Today I actually drove by a small Kirby vacuum cleaner shop on Duluth's west end. Oh, the memories. It's 2008 now, and coffee drinking is an art form, like dancing and painting, it takes on many forms.

My old Biology book is somehow different now, since I've written this story on its cover, I write with a hard hand. The watermelon colored paper has been interesting to write on but I think the story would have been better written on paper the color of turquoise! My pen name is the "Queen of Ireland"

First Show.

I haven't had a chance to create Lydia's own account so she's writing on mine.
I had so much fun because yesterday I went to my very first horse show!!!!!!!! I was both excited and nervous, but I really had fun.I road a cute speckeled horse named Sigh, and we did great!

It's all about the CHEESE!

This past summer we had a realization that it's really all about cheese in Minnesota. We were eating cheese curds, Nachos with extra cheese, saying cheese for the picture and Lydia was singing a song entitled" The wind blowing through the Cheese". It was one of the cheesyist family moment of the trip.

Smores

Kathy's Grandchildren from left to right: Simon, Gordon, Lydia, Ava, Lonnie, Joshua and Henry in our hearts.

I was able to visit Duluth this summer and see my mom, dad, sister, nieces and nephews. We all had a wonderful time. We spent many a night sitting around a fire eating Smores. So here is the tidbit about Smores that I have thought is just the best idea.... You all know how a smore usually requires a slab of chocolate, with a roasted marshmallow or two and graham crackers.... Instead of the graham crackers and chocolate, replace with a cookie, something like "Keebler" makes with the layer of chocolate on the back and pin stripes of chocolate on the top. Roast your marshmallow and create a sandwich with the cookies. Yum!

P.S. I am sorry you all had to be a part of my help session with Irene. I surely did not think it would be posted to the Blog. Now I can't pretend I know what in the heck I am doing :)

Love you all - Heidi

Hello from Alaska

Hello everyone,

Thank you Irene for including me. I bet Alaska hasn't been in the news in a while. If some of you haven't heard our Governor was picked to be John McCain's VP candidate.

Here is a picture of her so if you see her you might recognize her.

I took this picture last February at the start of the 2008 Iron Dog. It was -25° and she hugged every team and wished them a safe trip and Gook Luck. I believe there were 24 teams.

Enough about Sarah. I like her, she has done a great job for Alaska and she is no only very nice but even better to me she is a good person.

Time for dinner,

Be safe,

Ed

problems "posting" a message. I have email at home and I set up my blogger
act. with my home email - orangevw@centurytel.net

I am wondering if I can't get in, because maybe my work address was what would
give me access ...... Do you know? I can get into the dashboard, but it
doesn't give me the option to Post a Message.

Talk to you soon.

Still playing around ........

Push play...... Here is Grandma's video. Also, the pictures below didn't show the way I had planned so I will tell you here about them. The top left is Bill in Korea in 1963, isn't he cute! Danielle looks so beautiful in a senior ball picture a few years back. Ryan is shown with his girlfriend of a year and a half when she took him to her junior prom. Ronnie and I are at a bar visiting with friends at our 25th school reunion and me and mom are together at Alex and Nikki Mejia's wedding in Vegas.

Adding pictures and videos are pretty easy. I encourage everyone to play around a bit :-).

Hello Everyone!

Just wanted to say a quick hello and try to post a few pictures to see how it works. I am also going to try and post a quick section of the video from Grandma Brady's DVD we did a few years back. Hope it works! If it does, watch it on the smaller screen because when I watched it bigger, it was really blurry. Love and miss you all, XXXOOO Kathy PS Mom, Thanks for setting this up!

Coming Down off an HGTV High

I love visiting Mom. I grew up in a very large Chicago Catholic family and never had time to spend alone with her. As the oldest of seven I had my own chores and schoolwork and lots of better things to do. Mom was always busy with the youngsters and had her own social life. I have come to enjoy the few weeks I am able to spend with Mom each year. One of our favorite things to do on these visits is watch house and garden network shows.
Mom had taste and a classic sensibility garnered from her middle class upbringing. My father had a flair for color and design. Every corner of each room of our house contained miniature vignettes. Dad was a craftsman who designed, built and decorated much of our furniture. As children we also haunted flea markets and antique stores before it was the cool pastime it is today. Without much money we had beautifully decorated rooms. House and garden shows naturally fit into a plan for fun while we were cooped up because of this year's March snowstorms.
I had questions which I noted before I left home. Should I paint the kitchen a new color to match the dusty pink kitchen counter tiles? I would like to remove the old vinyl flooring at our entrance way. With what should I replace it? Purely cosmetic concerns.
Each morning after breakfast we would settle in front of the television. Outside the snow would be falling in heavy wet balls and we were entirely enclosed in our safe little cocoon , mesmerized by the hum of the set.
The standard formats for the various shows differ little. At opening, a beautiful person, sometimes with a British accent, states the problem. A couple is desperate to move, to change or to refurbish their home, inside or out. They either have very little money or all the money in the world. Depending on their finances, they can hire one of three designers, a design professional or a group of students to help them with this process. The problem and the house are shown within the first five minutes. Commercials follow for the next 20 minutes, punctuated by bits of remodel. During the last two minutes we are treated to a look at the final product and sincere thanks by the couple who have either left town for the duration or have been awake for three days painting or replacing floors.
High end customers can chose their favorite of three designers who vie for the honor of tearing apart their current place and present them with a stylized plan and the cost. Upper middle class people can have their marital discord over the remodel soothed by yet another Britain or have great fun with a pricey Canadian who likes to wear lampshades and jokes around with her talented crew. Landscapers can work wonders, changing home facades for curb appeal. Those with less money who need to sell watch a real estate broker insult their home on closed circuit TV and then have a happy, polite person soothe their angst and cosmetically ready them for an open house.
Mom and I would devour these first five minutes, watch commercials, eat, gab or discuss just what we would do, thumb our noses at the choices given the subjects and generally laugh or cry at the outcomes. Sometimes I would find myself suddenly awake at 2:00 am watching the same show I saw at 10:00 pm and wait for the outcome yet again to make sure I hadn't missed anything.
Did I say discuss what we might do? If I could have carried a sledgehammer on my return flight, I would have brought one home with my bags and started flailing at my house before I unpacked. Everything there was substandard. My floors needed to be sanded. There was an offending kitchen wall cutting off light in the room and enclosing a less than roomy table and bench bungalow nook. And then there was the dusty pink tile with the red stripe flanking my old porcelain sink, which also encased my outdated plumbing. French doors needed to open out to a lovely deck which would cover the unsightly basketball court in the backyard. In my mind all of these revisions would take a maximum of one half hour to complete.
My nights were consumed with thoughts of changing my home life for the better. My days were spent drawing plans and visiting home improvement centers. No I didn't like the standard consoles for the new bathroom sink or the acrylic shower surrounds. I needed granite or soapstone at the very least.
I presented my husband, Bill, with some of my ideas. He knowingly looked at me and then his eyes glazed and he nodded. That nod spoke volumes. Yes, I could see that there was a great deal of work involved but he was capable of hard work, and I would be able to help him through every aspect of this remodel. Or was it a rehab.
Yes, I was ready for rehab, but not the housing type. My eyes were becoming irritated from reading catalogs, my fingers numb from long hours at the computer searching for just the right, simple and elegant arts and crafts hardware. I neglected myself and my family and felt symptoms of low house esteem.

The classic symptoms of addiction are well known. The emotional and physical cravings have been depicted in countless movies, self help books and novels. Releasing ourselves from the rigors and torments accompanying the overpowering need to continue and act upon our obsession is nearly impossible. Fortunately I had spent very little cash in this process.
My life began to turn around when I bought a book about affordable remodeling. Reality hit as I looked throughout the book at gutted rooms, dusty floors and many workers with very professional equipment working in areas that were entirely unlivable. If I removed that one tiny non-weight bearing wall, I would then have to replace the entire kitchen floor, find a spot and the plumbing for my washer and dryer, and knock out the back of the house to increase the size of the back door.
Where would we live? How would we pay for this? A roomy table area would not bring my husband to the table for our nightly meals. Didn't I love that cute little nook and the fact that my grandchildren did their homework and snacked there each day after school? Didn't everyone gravitate to the basketball court for fun following family celebrations. My breathing began to slow. My heart rate steadied. The load lifted. Ahhh...
I felt happiness and contentment once again, no longer desperate for change and without that consumer high, I phoned Mom. "You can't imagine what I have just been through", I told her. I could feel the smile behind her voice. "You always were an "all or nothing" gal, sweetheart. Go pick out a pretty color and buy a can of paint and sand the floor at your entrance, and you'll be just fine." I realized then that those weeks we spent laughing, fantasizing and enjoying each other's company, was the perfect redo.

Hi from B'ville

Thanks to Irene for a great idea!

Winter is coming and we can sure tell with the changing color of leaves, lots of Monarch butterflies feeding to gain strength for the great journey and of course the changing temperatures!

Kaitlyn has started college and looks every part the student. Logan will be finishing his studies at RIT this season, even though he's graduated already! He has kindly been helping me with some major construction at home, help that is greatly appreciated. Ellen has purchased a nice Toyota Corolla and we all love it!

We love you all! Have a happy season!

Hi from Johnstown

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to blogging so I hope this works. This seems like a great way for all of us to stay in touch. What a great idea Irene.
Well thing in Johnstown are going fine. Our city is celebrating its 250 Anniversary. This last weekend there was a parade. The Grand Marshal was a direct decendent of our founder Sir Willam Johnson. He came all the way from England. It sure is nice to live in a place with so much history.
Thats it for now, I hope everyone is well and take care. Love Paul B

Welcome family

Dear Family,

I have just created this blog as our family newsletter. I am still trying to figure it out and when I have I hope it will become easy to use. I have included each of your addresses as authors. When I am certain about how this works, I will mail you all the information I have. When I wrote in your addresses an invitation was sent to you to view or post. Perhaps you'll get it right the first time, but I still don't quite get it. Please bear with me.

Eventually when you have something to enter you can just send it directly.
This blog should be a private one, I guess if someone has the address they can view it, but the general public should not be able to post or comment.

There are buttons on the taskbar for sending photos directly from your camera card or from your computer. Send artwork that way. Also there is a button for links.

Love, Irene
